Truly Ruby Red
This piece is an exquisite example of Gannaway Bros. craftsmanship, but it is the stunning natural ruby that takes center stage. One of the nicest one-carat rubies we have ever seen, it has a number of qualities that contribute to its magnificent beauty. While it is not unusual for a ruby to possess one or two redeeming qualities, rarely do we see so many in one stone. It is uncommon to see large gem quality rubies of a carat or more, cut into a round shape. This 1.31 ct. ruby is not only round, but it is also unusually well proportioned. This combined with a crystal-like clarity gives this stone breathtaking brilliance. Still it is the color of this ruby that will steal her heart away. It is truly the kind of red that you think of when you think “ruby red.”
From the Fabled Mogok Mining Region
This ruby was sold to us as a Mogok ruby. That means it originated from the fabled Mogok mining region in Burma. People have been mining rubies in the Mogok region for centuries and that area has produced some of the finest rubies the world has ever seen. Many of the most famous stones have come from that region. We wanted to design a ring stylish enough so that any woman would be proud to wear it. At the same time we wanted to give it a flavor of antiquity since the center stone was one of those fabled rubies from the ancient Mogok mines. All of us had a hand in the design and creation of this ring and we feel we have succeeded in creating a ring that combines contemporary styling with a feeling of ancient times.
A Sleek Design
From the top view this 18K gold ring has a sleek, clean styling that emphasizes the gemstones. The ruby is set in four prongs that are short and heavy. The prongs will not bend, and it will be a very long time before they wear out. Rubies are also one of the more durable gemstones, which makes this ring suitable for everyday wear. The ruby is set low for comfort, but not so low that light is unable to enter the gem from below. We feel it is good to allow some light in from underneath when a gemstone is heavily saturated with color. There are ten diamonds channel set on each side of the ring. They taper slightly and go far enough down the side to appear as if they go all the way around the ring.
The Lost Art of Hand Engraving
The hand engraving in this ring is reminiscent of former ages. Hand engraving is a skill that was almost lost over the last two generations, but at Gannaway Bros. Jewelers we are committed reviving this ancient art before it is lost for good. In this ring we use an ancient relief style engraving, with a contemporary pattern. There are three small diamonds flush set on each side of the ring. They were incorporated into the engravings to accent the stylized floral pattern. The ring is slightly built up at the top to give it dimension, yet it is still very comfortable, because the ruby is set low. The tailored styling and attention to detail, combined with one of the nicest Burmese rubies I have ever seen is sure to become an heirloom treasure passed down from generation to generation.
Certified by the AGTA
The AGTA Gemological Testing Center certifies this 1.31 ct. ruby as a natural Burmese Ruby. While it was represented to us as a Mogok ruby, and our examination seems to confirm that claim, we cannot certify a Mogok origin. The AGTA certifies the country of origin, but they do not specify specific mining districts within those countries. The enhancement ratings are, “Indications of heating” and “TE1”. Most rubies come out of the ground heavily fractured. Virtually all rubies today are heat treated in flux which tends to fill these fissures and cavities. The purpose of this treatment is to improve the overall appearance of the stone. The AGTA has created five grading categories for residue in fissures with “TE5” indicating “Significant residue in fissures”, a polite way of saying heavily filled. “TE1” indicates “Minor residue in fissures” and is the highest grade they award for a fracture healed ruby. The AGTA has developed three grading categories for residue in cavities. This ruby does not have a rating for this because it shows no evidence of cavities being filled. Overall this is a very highly rated ruby and the nicest we have ever offered.
*Most gem cutters heat their rubies to improve the gem's color and appearance. We recommend that you inquire whether a ruby has been heat treated and have the seller document any treatments in writing.
